This exceptional antique handmade Persian Shiraz Qashqai rug features a highly unusual pictorial design, making it a striking collector’s piece as well as a practical furnishing rug. At the centre of the composition are two stylised human figures, inspired by ancient Persian and tribal art, surrounded by an abundance of symbolic tribal motifs. The lower corners display a pair of impressive mythical lion-like creatures flanking a stylised tree, while birds, flowers, animals and geometric motifs are scattered throughout the field.
The richly decorated composition is enclosed by several traditional tribal borders, each filled with geometric rosettes and stylised floral motifs, giving the rug excellent balance and a bold visual presence.
The naturally aged colour palette includes deep madder red, terracotta, burgundy, charcoal, ivory, cream, soft gold, camel, olive green, muted blue and warm brown tones. The use of natural vegetable dyes has mellowed beautifully over the years, creating the rich character expected from an authentic antique Qashqai weaving.
Hand knotted from exceptionally fine hand-spun lamb’s wool using natural dyes, the rug has a wonderfully soft handle and a strong tribal construction. Approximately 70–80 years old, it remains in excellent antique condition with very slight wear and a good even pile.
This is a rare and highly decorative tribal rug that would make a superb centrepiece in a living room, study, library or country house interior. It is equally appealing to collectors seeking unusual Qashqai pictorial weavings.
