This impressive antique handmade Persian Heriz carpet dates from approximately circa 1900. It features the bold geometric drawing and strong architectural character traditionally associated with fine Heriz weaving.

Measuring 340 × 235 cm (approximately 11 ft 2 in × 7 ft 9 in), it is an excellent size for a living room, dining room, drawing room, reception room or large study.

The carpet has a softly aged red field centred by a large, strongly drawn medallion in shades of dark indigo, muted green, ivory, soft pink and warm brown. Ivory corner spandrels lighten the composition, while angular floral motifs and scrolling forms create depth and movement throughout the design.

A classical dark indigo border, decorated with large floral palmettes and geometric vines, frames the carpet beautifully. Its mellow natural colours and gently worn surface give it the distinctive character that is highly valued in genuine antique Heriz carpets.

Hand knotted from fine wool coloured with natural dyes on a cotton foundation, the carpet has a durable construction suitable for regular household use. It remains in good antique condition with an even low pile, consistent with its considerable age.
